The European Research Council (ERC) awarded its Consolidator Grants to 301 top scientists and scholars across Europe. This project is part of the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, and has a total budget of €600mn.
The recipients are based in 24 different countries, mostly
in Germany (52 grants), the United Kingdom (50), France (43) and the
Netherlands (32). The participating projects address a wide range of topics in
physical sciences and engineering, life sciences, as well as social sciences
and humanities.
In the Life Sciences category, 89 researchers from
institutions on Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, France,
Ireland, Israel (a Horizon 2020 associated country), the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal,
Spain, Sweden, and the UK, have received grants for projects looking into a
variety of issues, from iron regulation to innovative therapeutic strategies to
long-term health effects of food additives.
The panel structure in Life Sciences included nine
subcategories:

- Genetics, 'Omics', Bioinformatics and Systems Biology
- Cellular and Developmental Biology
- Physiology, Pathophysiology and Endocrinology
- Neurosciences and Neural Disorders

- Applied Medical Technologies, Diagnostics, Therapies and Public Health
- Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Biology
- Applied Life Sciences, Biotechnology and Molecular and Biosystems Engineering

For this round of competition, 2,453 research proposals were
submitted, of which 707 in Life Sciences; the success rate is 12,3%. It is
estimated that around 2,000 jobs for postdoctoral fellows, PhD students and
other staff working in the grantees' research team would be created as a result
of this new round of funding.
