Austria has an excellent network of motorways, expressways and federal highways. Tolls are compulsory on all motorways and expressways, and you will need a toll sticker to use Vienna's city motorways.
Distances are short from major European capitals such as Berlin (681 km), Munich (435 km), Budapest (243 km) or even Prague (331 km).
By train
Vienna has several railway stations for international railway services. The Austrian railroad network is operated by the Austrian Federal Railway (ÖBB).
Vienna Central Station
Südbahnhof (eastern section): Regional and local trains from the east (e.g. from Bratislava) arrive in Vienna here. Some long-distance trains on the Ostbahn will stop in Vienna Meidling and at the Westbahnhof.
Public transport: D, O, 18, 69A, 13A, suburban railway
Vienna Meidling Station
This modernised and extended station temporarily replaces Vienna's Südbahnhof. It is in the 12th district, at the end of Meidlinger Hauptstrasse. The long-distance trains (e.g. from the Czech Republic or Poland) will also end or start at Vienna Meidling, or will continue through to Wiener Neustadt, with some going as far as Villach.
Public transport: U6, 62, 7A, 7B, 8A, 9A, 15A, 59A, 62A, “Badner Bahn“, suburban railway, Vienna Airport Lines
Westbahnhof (Vienna West Station)
Vienna's Westbahnhof is where most trains from Western Europe and Western Austria arrive in Vienna.
Public transport: U3, U6, 5, 6, 9, 18, 52, 58, suburban railway, Vienna Airport Lines
Other railway stations: Station Vienna Mitte, Station Vienna Praterstern, Franz Josefs Bahnhof
By boat
River cruise boats arrive in Vienna either at the Nussdorf mooring in the 19th district, or at the main mooring for the Vienna Danube Region at the Reichsbrücke in the 2nd district.
